L-Carnitine (levocarnitine) is a quaternary ammonium compound that serves as an essential cofactor for the transport of long-chain fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix, where they undergo β-oxidation for ATP production. It is biosynthesized endogenously from the amino acids lysine and methionine and is also obtained from dietary sources. In research settings, L-carnitine is used as a tool compound to study mitochondrial function, lipid metabolism, and cellular energy homeostasis in both in vitro and in vivo models.

Handling and storage
