HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) — Research Grade Glycoprotein, ≥95% Purity (HPLC)
Heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone. Luteinizing hormone receptor agonist. Lyophilized powder. Lot-specific COA included.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by syncytiotrophoblast cells of the placenta during pregnancy. It is a heterodimer composed of two non-covalently associated subunits: an α-subunit that is structurally identical to the α-subunit of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and a β-subunit that confers receptor specificity and biological activity. The β-subunit contains a unique C-terminal extension with four serine-linked carbohydrate chains that are absent from LH, and these glycosylation differences are responsible for HCG’s extended half-life relative to LH.
HCG binds and activates the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR), a G-protein–coupled receptor expressed on gonadal tissues. Receptor activation triggers cAMP accumulation and downstream steroidogenic pathways. In research settings, HCG is used as a tool compound to study gonadotropin receptor signaling, steroidogenesis, and reproductive endocrinology in both in vitro and in vivo models.
Supplied as a sterile-filtered, lyophilized powder for in vitro and preclinical research applications. Each lot is independently verified for purity and identity and ships with a Certificate of Analysis.

Note: HCG is produced by extraction from human pregnancy urine or by recombinant DNA technology. The purity and specific activity may vary by source. Suppliers list molecular weights ranging from approximately 36,700 to 39,500 Da depending on the glycosylation profile and measurement method. Verify the specific activity, purity, and molecular weight against the Certificate of Analysis supplied with your lot.
Research applications
HCG is used in laboratory settings to investigate:
-
LHCGR signaling and cAMP accumulation — activation of the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor and downstream steroidogenic pathways in gonadal cell culture models
-
Steroidogenesis research — testosterone and progesterone production in Leydig cell and granulosa cell models, with HCG used as a standard agonist for LHCGR activation
-
Reproductive endocrinology — comparative study of HCG versus LH receptor binding and activation, and the role of glycosylation in hormone half-life and potency
-
Analytical method development — immunoassay calibration, LC-MS/MS quantification, and reference standard preparation for HCG analysis in biological matrices
-
Doping control research — development of dried blood spot (DBS) extraction protocols and nanoLC-MS/MS methods for detecting exogenous HCG in athletes
-
Gynecological research — HCG-secreting cell models and gestational trophoblastic disease research
Handling and storage
Reconstitute under aseptic conditions using sterile water or an appropriate aqueous buffer. HCG is soluble in water. Aliquot immediately after reconstitution to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Lyophilized powder is stable for up to 2 years at −20 °C under sealed, desiccated, light-protected conditions. Reconstituted solutions should be stored at 2–8 °C and used within 14–21 days. Do not freeze reconstituted solution.
For laboratory use by qualified personnel only.
