The compound is designed to replicate the actions of oxyntomodulin, an endogenous GCGR/GLP-1R dual agonist that influences body weight and liver health. Its proposed mechanism combines reduced food intake through GLP-1 receptor agonism with glucagon receptor-mediated effects on energy expenditure and hepatic metabolism. Preclinical studies indicate that Survodutide peptide acts through circumventricular organs in the brain and activates neuronal regions associated with appetite regulation, including GLP-1R–expressing satiety nuclei.

The dual mechanism distinguishes Survodutide peptide from selective GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1R activation mediates insulin secretion, appetite suppression, and gastric emptying, while GCGR activation increases energy expenditure and hepatic fatty acid oxidation. In Phase 2 trials, participants assigned to the 4.8-mg dose achieved a mean body-weight reduction of up to 18.7% at 46 weeks, compared with 2.3% with placebo.

Handling and storage
